Welcome to my personal biography. My name is Ms. Kovaleski, but I'm better known as Miss K. I am the Technology Instructor here at Flagship Elementary where I share a lab with my fellow friend, Miss Morgan. My story begins not too far from my current classroom. I grew up in the the South side of Detroit like many of my students.
As a child, I grew up with my parents and sister in a small brick bungalow only a few miles away. Both of my parents were engineers and worked in the auto industry designing and building cars. Even as a little girl, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I even turned my entire basement into a clasroom! Using my sister and my pet dog Mindy, we held detention on our front porch and would visit the swingset in our backyard for recess.
Upon graduating college, I attended Schoolcraft College before transferring to the University of Michigan-Dearborn where I studied Elementary Education. There were so many things I wanted to learn about, I had trouble deciding on a major. My solution was to pick a double-major! That means I chose to focus in two different areas: Language Arts and Child Behavioral Science (or the way children think). My minor concentrated on Social Studies because I loved to learn about history, goverment and geography.
After college, I spent many years as a guest substitute teacher. I visited many different cities and taught second grade for almost three years! During the summer months, I also taught young children how to use computers. My experience with teaching computers later came in handy at Flagship. Over the five years I have been teaching, I have made many friends and met students from many different cultures. Learning about different cultures and trying new things is really exciting. Someday I hope to travel to some of the many different countries my students have came from. In the Spring of 2009, I became a guest teacher at my current home and began the new school year as the Technology Instructor.
When I'm not at school, you may find me at the library helping young children learn how to read. I also belong to a book club and read at least one book a month. I enjoy meeting with new friends to discuss literature. The outdoors is very important to me. I am currently creating a perennial garden in my backyard and have plans to construct a Koi pond. On sunny days, you can usually find my dog Lacey and I visiting the local park or hiking. We also enjoy our yearly camping trips. Lacey doesn't mind the fact that I really enjoy cooking or trying new recipes too. At home, I often relax by knitting or scrapbooking, especially during those long and cold Michigan winters!
